Micronutrient Deficiency : Nutrients like iodine, vitamin E and calcium are extremely important for the body. But the surprising thing is that more than 5 billion people in the world are suffering from their deficiency. This problem is even more serious in our country, because most of the people with nutritional deficiencies live here.
According to a study published in The Lancet Global Health Journal, people in India are not consuming enough essential micronutrients like iron, calcium and folate. More than two billion people across the world are deficient in these. This is affecting not only their immunity but also their physical and mental health.
what does the study say
In this study, estimates were made about the intake of 15 micronutrients in 185 countries, which is based on a diet without supplements. Researchers from Harvard University found in this study that 70% of the world’s population, i.e. 5 billion, is deficient in iodine, vitamin-E and calcium. In India, women are more deficient in iodine than men, while men are more deficient in zinc and magnesium than women.
Impact on so many people of India
This study states that the consumption of nutritious coarse grains like jowar and bajra has now reduced considerably. Due to which the Indian population is facing the risk of nutritional deficiency. It has been estimated that out of the 2 billion people suffering from nutritional deficiency in the world, one third live only in India. The main reason for this can be the lack of nutrients in food.
Calcium deficiency is highest in youth
The study has revealed that the risk of calcium deficiency is highest among people aged 10 to 30 years. This problem is more prevalent in South Asia, South East Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. Due to powerful fertilizers and toxic chemicals, the nutrients have decreased and the toxic elements in grains have increased.
In the last 50 years, the deficiency of zinc and iron in rice has reduced by 33% and 27% respectively. Whereas the amount of poisonous element arsenic has increased by 1493%. Due to which not only is there a lack of nutrition in food, but it is also causing harm to health in many ways.
